Iconic Sounds of Trailer
By Rebecca King
Woman in Black Trailer Sound Analysis
The first sound we hear is the howling wind blowing outside the house, which is an example of Diegetic Sound. This is eerie and sets the mood of the film. This sound is often connected to isolationor being alone and the setting is introduced as desolate as we see no people and the house seems abandoned. The howling mood sets the scene and unnerves the audience.
The music is then introduced into the scene and is sychronus to the creepy toys movements. For this reason the music can be seen as either Diegetic or Non-Diegetic and is in a minor key. The tune resembles that of a nursary rhyme and is a continuous riff, keeping the audience on the edge of their seats. The instruments chime and the pace is slow at first and in synch with the cuts to shots. We still hear the wind in the background.
As the trailer builds to a scary climax the music speeds up and becomes disjointed. The music increases in speed and volume and an echo effect is added to the chimes. As the tempo increases so does the speed of the shots and the chimes per beat. This leads to loud music with many chimes just before the musical climax.
At the climax the beats return slow contrasting the fast editing pace and clashing notes are used to punctuate the silence. Finally the chimes stop and all the audience hears is the wind.
The chimes throughout the music are accompanied at some points by string instruments and drums or synthetic sounds to punctuate some shots, as well as sound effects such as thunder.
A child's voice is used for the voiceover as children are a common convention of horror movies and are often seen to be creepy or unnatural. The childs voice connects well with the toys and the seemingly nursery rhyme inspired music. The child's innocence and lack of emotion contrasts the fear the trailer provoks in the audience. This is Non-Diegetic sound.
At the end of the trailer multiple whispers are layered on top of each other so the audience cannot understand what is said.We cannot see where they originate so the sound is Non-Diegetic.
