Creating Mood in a Horror Movie

By Rebecca King

To create a dark and emmersive mood/atmosphere in horror film making there are many things you can do. In post production you can use brightness, colour tint and saturation filters to darken the scene. A blue tint can create a cold and desolate mood, where orange flickering light creates shadows and mystery. There are many trope chartacters in horro, such as in a ghost or paranormal horror movie there is the non believer and in many horror movies there is a virgin who usually survives at the end of the movie. Music and sound effects can be used to create jumpscares or increase tension in the scene. Cliffhangers leave the audience on edge and will make them want to see more.
